Research Peptides Explained: What Each Compound Is and Where It Stands (2026)

Short, sourced explainers for 21 compounds sold as research peptides: what each one is, whether any version is approved, what regulators have said in 2026, and what to look for on a certificate.

This is our index of plain-language explainers for compounds sold as research peptides. Each page covers what the compound is, who developed it, what the published evidence actually covers, its regulatory status as of October 2026 and how to check a certificate of analysis. None of them contain dosing or use guidance.

Notice: Research peptides are sold for in-vitro laboratory research only. They are not FDA-approved, not for human or animal consumption, and this page is not medical advice. It contains no dosing or use guidance.

What every explainer checks

  • Approval status. Whether any product with this active ingredient is approved by FDA or another regulator, and why a research-labeled vial isn't that product.
  • FDA compounding status. Where the compound sits on FDA's 503A bulk-substance lists and what the Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee voted. Background: FDA peptide regulation in 2026 and the regulatory news tracker.
  • Sport. Whether WADA's Prohibited List covers it.
  • The evidence. What published human trials, animal studies and cell work actually show, with links to the papers or trial records.
  • The certificate. What identity, purity and contamination results to look for. See how to read a peptide COA and our directory of peptide testing labs.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What are research peptides?

Short chains of amino acids, and a few non-peptide compounds such as NAD+, sold labeled 'for research use only'. They aren't approved drugs, even when an approved drug shares the same active ingredient, and FDA treats them as unapproved drugs when marketing shows they're meant for people.

Are any research peptides FDA-approved?

Some share an active ingredient with an approved drug: semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy), tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound), tesamorelin (Egrifta) and bremelanotide or PT-141 (Vyleesi). A research-labeled vial isn't the approved product and isn't made or checked under that approval.

Which research peptides did FDA's advisers review in 2026?

FDA's Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee met in July 2026 and voted on compounds including BPC-157 and epitalon. As of October 21, 2026, FDA hadn't acted on those votes, and a further meeting is expected by February 2027.

Are research peptides banned in sport?

Many are. WADA's 2026 Prohibited List covers BPC-157 and other unapproved substances under section S0, and growth factors and GH secretagogues such as TB-500, IGF-1 analogues, CJC-1295 and ipamorelin under S2.
