Is Retatrutide FDA Approved? Status, Filing Date and Timeline (October 2026)

Retatrutide is not FDA approved. Lilly has reported five phase 3 trials and plans to submit for US approval in the first quarter of 2027. Here is the dated timeline, what happens after filing, and what it means for vials sold as research retatrutide.

No. Retatrutide is not FDA approved, and it isn't approved anywhere else either. As of October 21, 2026, Eli Lilly has reported five phase 3 trials and says it plans to submit retatrutide for US approval in the first quarter of 2027. FDA's review only starts after that submission, so an approval cannot come before 2027. Lilly says the drug is available only to people enrolled in its clinical trials.

What happens after Lilly files

  1. FDA decides whether to accept the application for review, normally within 60 days of receiving it.
  2. FDA reviews it. Under FDA's user-fee goals, a standard review of a new molecular entity aims for a decision about 10 months after the 60-day filing date, and a priority review about 6 months after it (FDA PDUFA goals). Lilly hasn't said whether it will seek priority review.
  3. FDA approves, asks for more data, or rejects it. Only an approval would put a retatrutide brand on the US market.

So the earliest realistic decision falls in late 2027 if Lilly files in Q1 2027 and the review runs on schedule. Websites quoting an exact approval month are estimating; FDA has published no date.

What this means for "research" retatrutide

  • It is not the trial drug. A vial sold online as research retatrutide (often labeled "GLP-3," "GLP-3 R" or "RT") is not made under Lilly's drug controls, and its identity and amount depend entirely on the seller.
  • FDA is enforcing against it. FDA says it has warned companies that label unapproved GLP-1 drugs "for research purposes" or "not for human consumption" (FDA).
  • Lilly is suing sellers. Eli Lilly has sued 11 retatrutide sellers since August 2026, including online peptide vendors; see every Eli Lilly peptide lawsuit.
  • Check the paperwork. If you buy it as a laboratory reference material, insist on a lot-matched COA with mass-spec identity from a lab you can verify. See how to read a peptide COA and how to verify a Janoshik report.
  • Compare sellers on testing, not price alone. Our retatrutide vendor ranking and retatrutide price index list who publishes COAs.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is retatrutide FDA approved?

No. As of October 21, 2026 retatrutide is not approved by FDA or any other regulator. Lilly says no medicine containing retatrutide has been approved for human use anywhere, and that it is available only in Lilly-sponsored clinical trials.

When will Lilly submit retatrutide to FDA?

Lilly said on July 23, 2026 that it plans to submit retatrutide for US approval in the first quarter of 2027, after it completes the manufacturing (CMC) data package. We found no announcement of an earlier submission as of October 21, 2026.

When could retatrutide be approved?

There is no approval date. FDA's review starts only after Lilly submits, and under FDA's user-fee goals a standard review of a new molecular entity aims for a decision about 10 months after the 60-day filing date (about 6 months under priority review), so approval cannot come before 2027. Any month given online is a guess, not an FDA date.

Can a pharmacy compound retatrutide?

No. FDA's GLP-1 page, current as of October 1, 2026, says retatrutide and cagrilintide cannot be used in compounding under federal law.

Is research-labeled retatrutide legal to sell?

FDA says it has warned companies selling unapproved GLP-1 drugs falsely labeled 'for research purposes' or 'not for human consumption,' and its August 24, 2026 warning letter to Peptide Partners identified a product called 'GLP-3 Reta' as retatrutide. A research label is not an approval.
